WHO ARE HOME DOCUMENTARY SESSIONS FOR?
I photograph all people and all families of any stage, age, size, shape and composition. Depending on your household, your session might include the ordinary morning rituals of feeding little or big ones, dressing, playing, or getting ready for the day ahead. Or an outing to a local place you regularly frequent. Or it might be just you, or you and a partner, doing the things that may seem mundane at this point in time, but will be looked upon with nostalgia as all things change.
If you are interested in having your extended family photographed (with or without younger children), then I recommend an activity of some sort to help encourage more authentic interactions than just standing in front of the camera. This might be a walk on the beach, working in the garden, preparing for and going on a picnic, garden games, building a fire and cooking dinner, going on a hike, or barbecue, etc.
WHAT IS A HOME DOCUMENTARY SESSION?
Picture you in your home chatting to a friend, someone is laughing and there’s coffee on the table. It’s still early, not everyone is awake yet, but suddenly a voice calls from the hall and you rise to attend to them. It’s everything like an ordinary day in your house, and that’s the way it should be. The only difference is that friend is me, and I’m there to capture this typical day as it unfolds.
Documenting your life doesn’t mean capturing you or your family at your best. There’s never a perfect time or ideal moment to record you as you are; we are all always changing, growing and developing and so no single moment will be representative of you and your entire life.
The point is for the photographs to serve as a capsule of a particular moment in time that is necessarily unique and unrepeatable. Even though every day may currently seem uneventful or repetitive, incremental changes will ultimately become a gulf between the then and the now, and the time you are living will become foreign and yet wistfully familiar.
As such, you don’t need to have the squeakiest home, or cleanest kids (or any kids at all for that matter) to have photographs taken that are special; it is time that makes all things beautiful and better understood.
Life events where you might consider booking a home documentary session:
- maternity – usually between 32 – 37 weeks
- newborn – usually within 2 weeks of birth or a later session up until 2 months of age.
- first smiles & laughs – from 2-6 months
- sitting > crawling > walking – from 6 months to 1 year
- toddler to preschool – from 1 year
- first to last school days – from 5 – 18 years
- grown kids – graduations & birthdays – from 18 years
- extended family get-togethers
- grandparents visiting
I charge $499 per session, which is 90 minutes and includes approximately 50-90 digital photographs. I can also create a custom package if there is something in particular you’re after, just ask.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGES?
All professionally edited high resolution digital images. I don’t limit the photographs delivered; the final amount will depend upon the conditions at the time and the hours booked. I generally deliver between 30-60 photographs per hour (so approximately 50-90 in a 90 minute session), but you may receive a little more or less than that estimate depending on the pace of the session.
WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGES?
You will have the opportunity to purchase prints, a photo book, or framed photographs following the session, but are under no obligation to do so.
I am happy to travel up to an hour from Wollongong CBD without charge, but if you live further away than that, then you will be charged an additional $30 per hour or part thereof of travel, plus any additional expenses incurred as a result of your location.
I am irregularly based in Berry and Lake Tabourie, so depending on the timing of your session, I may be able to accomodate your location without additional travel fees if I’m in the area.
* Prices are subject to change without notice, and are secured only through the payment of a non-refundable booking fee and signing of an agreement.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW LONG IS A SESSION?
A single session starts at 90 minutes. You are welcome to add any extra time you think you may need to the base, for an additional amount.
You may also book a package of 2-4 sessions over 6-12 months. This is particularly nice where you have small ones that rapidly change over the first years of their lives, or several family occasions over a short period.
I believe in the power and importance of forming authentic relationships with everyone I photograph. The longer or more frequent the session, the more opportunity everyone will have to relax and settle into their natural way of being. It’s in moments of true interaction and comfort that images that are beautiful, interesting and genuine are formed.
WE'RE HAVING A BABY, DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHY PACKAGES?
If you’re expecting a new baby in your life, then congratulations! Have a little look and read about documentary coverage of your birth.
But if birth photography isn’t for you, then you might like to chronicle the fleeting but profound changes that occur in the period of a time from your pregnancy to when your baby turns one, in a year in the life package for $1799 (instead of $2000 if booked individually).
This includes, one of each of the above mentioned sessions (maternity, newborn, first smiles & laughs, sitting > crawling > walking) with the option to add a physical album containing a selection of the photographs from your sessions for an additional amount.
This can also be purchased in addition to your birth photography package.
WHAT DO WE WEAR?
Well, that depends. What do you usually wear? The main objective is for you to feel comfortable, so dress for the conditions and the activity. We’re not producing a magazine cover, nor should it look like it. So wack on your everyday jeans and plain t-shirt and that’ll be great – no need to colour coordinate and personally I think doing so can come across as inauthentic.
The only thing I will suggest is that you all try to avoid clothing with brands or text on it as it can be distracting in the images. Other than that, do what you like!
If you don’t usually wear makeup, don’t, if you do, then go for it! But don’t wear more or try something different just because you’re being photographed.
CAN WE MEET BEFORE WE BOOK?
Absolutely! I would love to meet you before or after you’ve made a booking. I’m happy to travel up to half an hour from Wollongong to come to you, otherwise we can meet somewhere in the local area and I’ll buy you a coffee/juice/muffin.
WHEN CAN THE SESSION TAKE PLACE?
I generally only book these sessions on week days (M-F), as I photograph weddings and other events on weekends. However, depending on the season, I may have some weekend dates available. Just get in touch to discuss availability. I’m also happy to book a session outside of usual work/school hours (e.g. early morning or evening).
Sarah took such beautiful photos of our adult children, their partners and our grandson of 3 months at the beach. This was a Christmas gift to us and we couldn’t have been more thrilled. We now have special memories of the first Christmas spent with our grandson thanks to Sarah.
I had the pleasure of Sarah coming into my home yesterday and photographing my beautiful family. She has captured natural everyday memories that I will treasure forever. Would recommend her to anyone. Thank you so much
We have worked with Sarah twice now and will continue booking her in the future for other important events in our family. So far she has done some maternity photos and some when our daughter was 3 weeks old. The photos were amazing! She does a great job at capturing people in a natural setting doing what you would normally do and her portrait shots are great too. I strongly recommend booking her for your next event.
OMG!! These are so beautiful! These will be so treasured by my fam and I. We’ve never had anything like this. Thanks so much, Maddie
